A desert is an area that receives very little rain (less than 250mm a year), or loses more moisture than it receives. They generally have very little vegetation, and occur in hot, temperate or cold areas. The two largest deserts in the world are in fact Antarctica and the Arctic, with the Sahara being the largest hot desert. Atacama (in Chile) is the driest. Deserts cover approximately one third of the Earth’s land surface.
